Shallowood: Has a New "Documentary" Checked Its Facts?![]() More than ever these days, Hollywood has a reputation for slanting material leftward and veteran filmmaker Robert Greenwald (Xanadu) is not helping. He’s also not helping the justifiably great Internet reputation of attorney Lawrence Lessig who is representing the cinéaste in the defense of his latest film, Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers. This documentary makes salacious allegations about certain American companies, implying they are greedy enterprises with blood on their hands. Among the attacked companies is CACI, whose CEO Jack London wrote to Greenwald and Lessig in protest. CACI’s attorneys also filed a point-by-point refutation of the film’s “facts,” asking Greenwald to reply. At first Lessig said that they would, that Greenwald would posts the CACI lawyers’ letter on his website and the filmmaker would demonstrate his version of the facts beside it. But then something happened. Things changed. CACI was never refuted. Silence reined and Lessig – was he being sandbagged by a client playing fast-and-loose with the facts – appeared to back away from direct defense of Greenwald. (Who could blame him?) On one level, this whole episode seems to be “small beer” about a not very watched movie. And I regret even posting this to give such sloppy, propagandistic filmmaking any publicity. But we live in serious times. In the atmosphere of blame-Bush-for-all-things, distortions like “Iraq for Sale” must be examined and countered if necessary. If Greenwald is correct with the facts of his film, he should show his cards. Otherwise he should withdraw his Shallowood production. ——— Comments (4)Michael Sheehan :Michael Sweet :Michael Sheehan: With all the sick crevices in this world (um, like, say, Dafur, or Somalia, or North Korea, or half of sub-Saharan Africa), you would think they could find something better to do with their time. But hey! If you go to Dafur you might just get you head blown clean off. Much better to stay in your office in DC and take cheap shots at Bush. Maximum sanctimony with minimum fuss. Peg C. :No one associated with "Xanadu" carries any weight with me - what a disastrous embarassment that was. Furthermore, the war profiteers I'm interested in are all the lefties who have made a billion dollar industry out of all their anti-war fundraisers, movies, books, and infection of most popular TV shows and all MSM organs. THAT is war profiteering! JoeS :The only thing to do is file a lawsuit. CACI appears to have been defamed. It is sad that lies have replaced political discourse. Hollow-wood seems dedicated to totalitarianism and perversion. The end seems to justify the means. Perhaps they will respond to financial retribution. Comments have been archived for this page. |

Thanks for the article.
I went to the 'Iraq for Sale' website and noticed that they were using Amnesty International as a reference to buttress their position. I then went to AI's website and found their posting of the correspondence between AI and CACI.
After reading the letters, I was sufficienly moved to send this note to AI:

Dear Sir,
I read the letter correspondence between Amnesty International and CACI International at the source web site.
Quite frankly, I empathize with Mr. London's failure to respond to your organization's second and third letters to him (dated 3 Jun 04 and 11 Jan 05).
Your letters read like screeds one would expect to get from some Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity (aren't these two terms mutually exclusive?) Agency in the Government.
He probably has a 'real job' and came to the conclusion that, when dealing with Amnesty International, his one letter reply (27 May 04) would never be enough ... especially when dealing with people who 'have an agenda' (like you).
Regards,
Michael Sheehan
PS
In 'another life' (60's and 70's), I actually used to contribute to Amnesty International. My ... how far you've wandered since then. You probably wouldn't even recognize yourself. Pity, really.
By the bye, could you refresh my memory as to just how many Iraqis died at Abu Ghraib?
